The Differences Between GPS Ceramic Antenna and PCB Antenna

Navigation antennas are becoming more and more common in our daily life, such as mobile phones, electronic watches, automobiles, navigation equipment and so on. According to different purposes, navigation antennas are also divided into many types, such as built-in antennas, GPS antennas, external antennas, timing antennas, and so on. So what is the difference between PCB antenna and GPS ceramic antenna?

1. The definition of GPS ceramic antenna and PCB antenna are different

GPS antenna uses GPS satellites to achieve navigation and positioning. The main task of the user's receiver is to extract the pseudo-random noise code and data code in the satellite signal to further calculate the position, speed and time (PVT) of the receiver carrier and other navigation information. Its types can be divided into bulk ceramic antennas and multilayer ceramic antennas.

The PCB antenna refers to the department on the PCB for wireless reception and transmission, which is usually set on the Bluetooth or wireless transmission module. Its wiring generally has a clear area to prevent the signal from dispersing and affect the receiving effect, and at the same time to make the omnidirectional antenna have directivity.

2. The characteristics of GPS ceramic antenna and PCB antenna are different

In terms of dielectric constant, GPS ceramic antennas are higher than PCB antennas, so the use of ceramic antennas can effectively reduce the antenna size. When designing the PCB antenna, there must be clearance around it. There should be no metal tools around, and the originals with metal should be reliably grounded, and special attention should be paid to not covering copper.

There are many types of outdoor antenna. GPS is composed of three departments: space section, control section and user section. The space segment consists of 24 satellites spread over 6 orbital planes. The orbit height of the satellite is 20200km, the inclination angle is 55 degrees, and the period is 12 hours. The orbital dispersion of the satellites ensures that at least 6 satellites can be seen at any time around the world, and the satellites continuously provide users with position and time information.

The control section is composed of a main control station, 5 monitoring stations, and three injection stations. The main control station is located in Colorado. The monitoring station tracks all GPS satellites in the field of view, collects satellite ranging information, and sends the collected information to the main station. The master station calculates the satellite's fine orbit, and generates navigation information for each satellite, which is transmitted to the satellite through the injection station.

The user segment is composed of a receiver, a processor, and an antenna. Calculate the user's location, speed and time by receiving satellite broadcast signals. The GPS view is based on satellite ranging, and users calculate their position by measuring their distance to the satellite. Each GPS satellite sends a position and time signal, and the user receiver measures the time when the signal arrives at the receiver, which is equivalent to measuring the interval between the user and the satellite. By measuring four satellites at the same time, the position, speed and time can be solved.
