1. Passive GPS antenna


There are many GPS antenna types, and the GPS antenna is one of them. When using a passive GPS antenna, only one ceramic chip receives the satellite signal from the sky and is directly connected to the module. This connection method has a simple structure. Standard ceramic sheets are low cost, mature technology, small footprint, suitable for emphasizing compact space GPS navigation products, Bluetooth GPS, mobile GPS and other small GPS consumer products.


The layout of this GPS passive antenna is from the antenna pin directly to the RF-IN pin of the module. This wire needs to be impedance matched, and there should be no electromagnetic interference near the antenna, which requires high PCB design and overall design. . But if a well-designed passive antenna GPS product has a very good performance, and low power consumption.


2. GPS active antenna


Generally, for equipment or vehicle-mounted devices, there is often a distance between the equipment and the GPS receiving module, and considering the convenience of installation, there may be a distance of more than 1 meter. In this case, we can only choose an active GPS antenna. Due to the antenna length of the active antenna, compensation is required when the signal is attenuated. Generally speaking, there are two-stage low-noise amplifiers to amplify the front-end signal of the antenna, and the amplified signal is output through the cable. The cable synchronously provides the DC voltage required by the LNA, and because the signal received by the antenna completes the signal reception and antenna amplification in the active antenna receiving head, it is far away from GPS equipment or other electrical equipment, and the interference source is minimal.


And because the antenna distance is extended, the installation location can be selected in a very ideal environment. Therefore, in actual use, the signal is often felt to be stronger, especially when the signal is started with a weak signal. Because the internal secondary amplifier will also have a certain gain, the start-up time is often faster. However, due to the internal secondary LNA, it will also consume a certain amount of power. The performance of different manufacturers' products is also different. The performance of the active antenna is mainly affected by the ceramic antenna sheet, LNA, antenna design, impedance matching, and screen spectrum. Test, antenna fine-tuning and output wire terminals and other aspects.


3. GAMIN navigation GPS antenna


In addition to the performance requirements of ordinary antennas, another special variety of active antennas, marine antennas, also need to have resistance to acid, alkali and salt spray, and good sealing performance, resistance to wind and waves. Because of the excellent signal of navigational GPS, it does not require high sensitivity, and higher reliability is more important. Due to the large size of the marine antenna and the large reflection area of the PCB, the overall gain is high and the stability is good.
